We’re incredibly proud to announce that Cornerstone Place’s groundbreaking housing project, the Whitworth Road development, has been named “Social Enterprise Investment Deal of the Year” at the prestigious UK Social Enterprise Awards 2023! This award, sponsored by Big Society Capital, shines a spotlight on the innovative ways SASC is partnering with charities and social enterprises to tackle major social challenges like homelessness.

Rochdale faces a critical need for stable and affordable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness or instability. The Whitworth Road project directly addresses this issue by building 14 self-contained homes specifically designed for those in need. These innovative homes are designed for sustainability and energy efficiency, using modern construction methods like modularity and renewable materials. This translates to reduced energy costs, a smaller carbon footprint, and most importantly, safe and secure shelter for our community.

Collaboration key to success

Making this project a reality wouldn’t have been possible without unwavering support and investment from various partners. Rochdale Borough Council’s dedication and crucial funding played a vital role, alongside the expertise of builders Agile Property & Homes. And of course, SASC is thrilled to have contributed a £844k loan, helping bring this initiative to life.

The Whitworth Road project takes a holistic approach to tackling homelessness. Stepping Stone Projects, a local homelessness charity, will manage the units and offer comprehensive support services to residents, ensuring they have the resources and guidance they need to thrive.

Impactful and scalable:

“The real relevance of this award is not about us, but about the scalable model we’ve created,” says Richard Kennedy, Co-Founder of Cornerstone Place. “We’ve built a solution that directly addresses the UK’s pressing need for social housing, while easing the burden on local authorities. This model can be replicated to provide homes where they’re needed most, without relying solely on public finance.”

Empowering change through partnership:

“SASC is delighted to have played a part in this award-winning project,” says Mark Bickford, CEO of SASC. “The Whitworth Road project truly embodies the power of collaboration and commitment. By working together with Cornerstone Place, Rochdale Borough Council, and Stepping Stone Projects, we’re creating lasting positive change for vulnerable individuals and communities. These modular homes, coupled with the charity’s support, offer a stepping stone towards independence for those who need it most.”

Investing in a brighter future

The Whitworth Road project stands as a testament to the potential of innovative solutions and dedicated partnerships in tackling complex social issues. By providing safe, sustainable housing and holistic support, it paves the way for a brighter future not just in Rochdale, but across the UK.

SASC is proud to be a part of this impactful initiative, and we’re committed to continuing to invest in projects that make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
